How did you get started in dental accounting?

I started in dental accounting with my original firm. The majority of the clients were dentists so it was a natural fit. Working with many different dentists is what keeps me in public accounting. Every day is different and every day I work with different clients.

What kinds of problems do you like solving for your dental clients?

I’ve been involved with many new dentists buying practices from established dentists, many of them include buying their parents practices. This is both exciting and challenging. I enjoy helping the younger dentists start their practices and watching them grow prosperous though the years.

How are you different than other CPAs that work with dentists?

Our team takes a holistic approach to accounting for dentists. We are involved not only in helping them establish a strong accounting system but we work with them throughout the year. We help with everyday operations, financing for new equipment, employee relations, retirement planning and tax. We have year-end meetings to review the financial health of their business, business and personal tax projections and general client relationship building.  Communication is also an important part of my client relationships. I'm there throughout the year to  help with their everyday questions and issues. I also work with their attorneys, financial planners, bankers and retirement plans.

What issue or issues do you see dentists struggling with most often?

I see a lot of cash flow and financing issues with my dental clients. Many of them also struggle with tax law changes and need help understanding retirement plans.

What is the number one thing a dentist can do to stay on top?

It is vital that dentists establish an efficient accounting system. Whether they outsource their monthly or quarterly write-up work or use their in-house accounting programs such as Quickbooks, they need to be sure they spend the time to keep their records up-to-date and timely.
