How did you get started in dental accounting?

Since the firm has such a strong dental client base, getting involved in dental accounting happened naturally. Although I was initially thrown into the fire without much choice, I immediately enjoyed working with dentists and dental practices. I find dentists to be straight shooters who generally tell you exactly how they are feeling, which makes things easier. They are also very loyal and trustworthy, which is great to see. They let us do the work we are trained to do and trust that the job is getting done as it should.

What is the most interesting problem or issue you’ve helped a dentist with?

A dental client was having sales & use tax issues. I helped him understand the complex laws and helped his practice gain and maintain compliance going forward. The dentist told me it was a lot easier to sleep at night knowing that that his practice was abiding by the sales & use tax laws.

How are you different than other CPAs that work with dentists?

I will respond to the dentist’s needs or question within 24 hours. The last thing anybody wants is a CPA who doesn't have time for them.

What issue or issues do you see dentists struggling with most often?

Cash flow is always an issue. The phrase “cash is king” certainly holds true to dental practices. At Rea, we proactively plan for cash flow crunches and work with dentists to minimize cash flow stress.

What is the number one thing a dentist can do to stay on top?

Be honest when reporting income and expenses and paying your taxes. It can certainly be frustrating to deal with the number of different taxes that small businesses are faced with, but it will not do you any good to try and cheat the system. In the end, if you are caught, it will only hurt you tenfold.
