How did you get started in dental accounting?

I have been working with dental practices since I was a junior in college. I have enjoyed it ever since. Dentistry is a fascinating profession, and when you combine that with running a small business, finances, taxes, personnel and servicing people…you have the best of all worlds.

What kinds of problems do you like solving for your dental clients?

I like it all -- from the new dentist buying a practice and going through the nerve racking process, to growth, to retirement. Each day brings something new and each client has their own unique challenges and opportunities.

How are you different than other CPAs that work with dentists?

For many of my dental clients, I'm their first call. Whether it is a business problem, finance issue, banking, retirement or any personal issues, they call me first. If they have a need beyond what I offer, I'll find them the help they need.

What issue or issues do you see dentists struggling with most often?

Dental practices are very similar to other business except there is the element of personal professional service. They struggle to balance school debt, home debt, practice debt, family life, retirement planning…just like any other business owner. That is why having someone that understands the business of dentistry is so important -- we know what they are doing on a daily basis and how their profession affects those things in their life.

What is the number one thing a dentist can do to stay on top?

Hire good people in their office. Hire legal, accounting, insurance, banking and investment professionals that understand the business of dentistry. When they do that, they can concentrate on dentistry.
